Encouraging children to read during the summer holidays can be tricky when there’s so much else to do. But the Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant way to include an extra element of fun – and this year even pre-School children can join in.

Space Chase is an adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landings, and features the Rocket family. They live on a satellite station and have been sent on a special mission to hunt down some dastardly alien adventurers.

Children who take up the challenge to read at least six books over the holidays will be given a special mission folder to collect stickers for each book they finish. There’s also a special Space Chase website where they can play games, enter competitions, review the books they’ve read and unlock extra rewards by using the special codes on their stickers. And at the end of the summer holiday, for children who complete the challenge, there are more prizes and rewards on offer.

Over the summer there will be lots of free space-themed events and activities at Oundle Library too. Some of them are drop-in sessions and others require booking because places will be limited. To book, just ask a member of staff when you next visit the library, contact them by Facebook or email

Finally, you may have noticed the wonderful space display in the library. It was created by members of the Pink House Craft Club, which meets at the library every Monday afternoon. From the space scenes on the boards, to the rocket and planet Earth in the main part of the library, it was a brilliant team effort. We think the library looks fabulous and we hope you agree!
