Library Life

The Friends' Committee

A brief round up of what the committee has been up to in 2018
2018 has been a year of highs and lows – and incredibly busy! We started the year full of trepidation that our library might be closed and we were ready for a fight to save it. Then we heard it would stay open, although the reorganisation of the library service across Northamptonshire has meant we lost our library managers (Katie and Charlotte). Now Oundle Library is a ‘spoke’ to Corby’s ‘hub’, and managed by Clare Boughton. It’s been a long period of transition but things are back on an even keel.

Our role is to raise funds and awareness. From quizzes and calendars, to pop-up shops and events, we work to improve the facilities at Oundle Library. This year we’ve found that holding events on Saturday afternoons, when the library is closed, allows us to accommodate larger audiences and is easier for our speakers. So as well as our annual Shakespeare and poetry celebrations we’ve organised talks, music and displays. Our thanks to everyone in Oundle who has helped us – particularly the groups of the Oundle U3A who are endlessly supportive.

Beyond the library the committee has been working to improve our communications. The new GDPR regulations pushed us to manage our membership list with Mailchimp software and we’ve learned how to create and send e-newsletters. We’ve also worked hard to keep our website topical, and added a new Blog section for book reviews. Boosting our presence on Facebook has been another objective, and we thank our volunteer, Jan Pearson, for helping with that. It all takes time but we’re beginning to see the rewards and our membership list is growing.

The response to our recent appeal for book donations to boost library stock has been quite amazing. And the Waitrose Community Matters appeal for money to buy one armchair for less mobile library customers has actually raised enough money for us to buy two!

We know from comments we’ve received through the year that Oundle loves its library and appreciates what we’re doing to help it thrive. And, in our turn, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all our Friends for all your help and support over the past year.
